Civilization by Marco Brambilla

Love this video work by Marco Brambilla. Civilization is a video piece commissioned by the Standard Hotel in NYC. The owner, who had recently enjoyed one of Brambilla’s previous works, wanted him to create a video installation inside the elevators that would change as guests ascended or descended floors. Taking this simple concept, Brambilla comped up a series of images in a style similar to early Netherlandish painter, Hieronymus Bosch. Working closely with Crush Inc. in Toronto, Canada, they quickly selected and looped myriad film/video clips, collaging them in a manner to transition from Hell to Earth to Heaven. The end product was displayed inside the elevators framed with black glass. As guests go up from ground floor to the penthouse, they get a hyper-stimulating glimpse of a journey from heaven to hell, and vice versa.

A still from Brambilla’s installation.

A Bosch painting illustration the parallel.

A snapshot of the user experience inside the elevator.

This video installation was recently augmented for Flash:Light NYC, where they made it 3D and projected ginormously in St. Patrick’s Basilica in Nolita. Quite rad. Thanks to colleague Evan Wexler for the tip!
