Rolling through the Bay

If I were a trust-fund kid, you’d likely find me doing things like this. Tons of time and devotion for something intricate and aesthetically pleasing.

Alas, I’ll leave it to Scott Weaver, whose 3,000+ hours of work on this elaborate kinetic sculpture comprised of 100,000 toothpicks.

Weaver, a fifth-generation Bay Area resident, was a prime candidate to create this woody wonderland that includes myriad facets of San Fran city life… down to rainbow toothpicks resembling the flags of the Castro.

The Rube Goldberg-esque piece, titled “Rolling through the Bay,” works by selecting which route you’d like to go and dropping a ping-pong ball down the chosen ramp.

“There’s the Golden Gate tour, which snakes through Chinatown and Aquatic Park and ends at the old Fleishhacker Pool. There’s the Cable Car tour, which travels past the painted ladies of Alamo Square into Golden Gate Park and onto the old Ferris wheel at Ocean Beach. There’s even a nod to the East Bay that features a BART train and the Bay Bridge.” -SFGate.com

The detailing is incredible and the structure as a whole, pretty whimsical.
