Wow. This is pretty amazing. Landscape Ecololgist, Eric Sanderson, describes his 10-year research project, the Mannahatta Project, which yielded a wealth of ecological and topographical info, as well as an amazing 3D map of Manhattan circa 1600—accurate down to the block. There were over 50 different ecosystems! That’s more than Yosemite. It’s better articulated in this TED Talks video my Dad sent me.
