British/Turkish fashion designer Hussein Chalayan always has innovative tricks up his sleeve. Though I thought his fragrance with Comme Des Garçons missed the mark (surprising), this collaboration with Puma turned out quite nice.

The Urban Mobility Backpack  is designed with two-way zip front compartment, padded laptop compartment with hook-and-loop closure inside main compartment, zip pocket, slip in pocket and padded mobile phone pocket in front compartment. Furthermore, it sports a dark charcoal waxed exterior shell, taped black zippers and heavy metal hardware, and built in hoodie for protection against the elements.

The Exquisite Book is a project based on the Surrealist game called the Exquisite Corpse. The book is a modified version of the game, played by one hundred contributing contemporary fine artists, illustrators, designers and comic artists.

In The Exquisite Book  this idea is emulated by ten groups of ten artists who participated in the process. Each artist contributed one page to the book. The first artist was given a few words to inspire their drawing. Each of the following artists only saw the page that immediately preceded their own. Each artist used images (and optionally, words) to create the continuation to the story, and the inspiration for the next artist in line.

Besides continuing the story of the last artist, there is another, more visual, connection between the pages. Each artist had a horizon line in their image that starts on the left side of the page and ends on the right. Where the horizon line of the first artist’s page ends, is where it begins for the next artist.

Each artist was given two weeks to complete their page. The process took approximately five months. The book was designed by ALSO (Julia Rothman, Jenny Volvovski and Matt Lamothe, RISD alumni [US]) published by Chronicle Books in Sept 2010.

The Victoria and Albert Museum, a decorative arts and design institution in London, will exhibit the world’s largest pieces of cloth made from spider silk—one of the rarest textiles in the world. (January 25 – June 5, 2012)

According to experts at the V&A, spider’s silk has not been woven since 1900 until just recently in 2011 by Simon Peers and Nicholas Godley. The two produced a four meter long woven textile made from the silk of more than a million female Golden Orb spiders collected in the highlands of Madagascar. Later this would be fashioned into an elaborately embroidered cape and a shawl.

Netherlands-based designer Lucas Maassen, known for his furniture and installation designs, recently employed his three sons to paint his newest furniture collection.
The process and outcome were both beautifully unique.

Due to Dutch labor laws, the boys were compensated only 1 Euro for each piece of furniture painted, and could only work three hours per week. Logistically, it’s enough to make one cringe, but for a project such as this it adds charm and value.

Adding to the aesthetic appeal were their height limitations, which left mirrors and shelving incomplete and wonderfully patchy.

While many time constraints are limiting, here they enhance aesthetics.
